Merseyside Civic Design Awards 2023

Welcome to the inaugural Merseyside Civic Design Awards. Launched to coincide with the 85th anniversary of the founding of Merseyside Civic Society in 1938, the Awards inclusively cover Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, St Helens, Sefton and Wirral. They will be awarded biennially and nominated projects must be completed within the previous three years, although nominations for 2023 can be from the previous five years to allow for time lost during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Awards recognise high quality projects that enhance our shared experience of the places around us. Categories for 2023 are…

Best New Build Project
Any building (excluding single family houses) completed between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2023.

Best Conservation Project
Any building conserved or converted to a high standard between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2023. Some or all of the historic fabric must remain visible.

Best Landscape Project
Any new or restored landscaping scheme completed between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2023. Examples include public squares, parks, etc.

Best Infrastructure Project
Any new piece of infrastructure completed between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2023. Examples include bridges, cycle paths, etc.

Best Hospitality Project

Any new build or significant refurbishment (interior or exterior) of a hospitality venue completed between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2023. Examples include hotels, pubs/restaurants, etc.

Best Community Project
Any project completed between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2023 with a focus on engaging with and/or giving back to the community.

Felicity Wren Award for Public Art
Awarded to a new or recently restored public artwork and named in memory of artist and MCS Council Member, Felicity Wren. The work must be a commissioned piece and make a positive contribution to the public realm. It must have been installed between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2023.

 

Test of Time Award

The recipient of this award is decided by the MCS Council and can be any project completed between the foundation of Merseyside Civic Society in 1938 and 2018, which has remained in use for its original purpose and has shown its design to be a resilient one.

 

Please Note:

Whilst there is no specific category for Best Sustainable Project it is now common practice for sustainability to be considered in all schemes and it will therefore be taken into account in all categories.

Nominations for all categories close at midnight on Monday 14th August 2023.Nominations are now closed

A shortlisting process will be undertaken and shortlisted projects visited by a panel of four invited judges to be announced in due course.

Judges reserve the right to enter shortlisted projects into whichever categories they deem appropriate.

A winners’ ceremony will take place at a venue tbc later in the year.

Winning projects receive a large framed certificate to be publicly displayed onsite.

The judges’ decisions are final.
