Heritage Plaques

As part of our aims of inspiring civic pride in our communities and celebrating and protecting the places where we live, MCS is exploring the scope of heritage plaques in the Liverpool City Region (LCR). We are working with local history groups, civic societies and others to collate information about existing heritage plaques using the online resource https://openplaques.org/ . We also hope to check the location and condition of existing plaques and identify plaques that have been damaged or are missing.

There are around 400 heritage plaques in the LCR, including 14 traditional blue plaques installed by English Heritage as part of an earlier pilot scheme and Historic England’s 2024 installation of a plaque at George Harrison’s birthplace in Wavertree. There are also heritage plaques of many different designs which have been erected by a variety of organisations and individuals. Anyone considering the merits of a new heritage plaque would benefit from first referring to the very useful and comprehensive guidance document created by English Heritage.
Looking forward, MCS hope that by mapping the range and locations of heritage plaques collaboratively with local groups, we gain a good understanding of any gaps in coverage that might usefully be filled, and how this might be achieved. For example, by supporting local heritage plaque schemes or initiating an MCS scheme.
