Merseyside Civic Society and the World Heritage Site
The MCS has been represented on the World Heritage Site Steering Group for a number of years. MCS has supported Liverpool City Council’s general approach, despite a few high-profile disagreements on specific developments within the WHS Buffer Zone [notably over Lime Street and the demolition of the Futurist]. The Society is keen to support Liverpool’s future growth and development, and sees this as entirely compatible with a rigorous approach to caring for the city’s wealth of historic structures, which are a true expression of the adventurous and innovative spirit of the city. After considerable debate, this White Paper has been prepared which confirms our agreed policy. This is embodied in a paragraph on ‘Decline, Evolution and Authenticity’, introducing our ‘Six Principles’ for action.
